It’s been a while since we’ve laughed. So long, in fact, I’ve forgotten what his sounds like. Ever since I found out that his mother wanted me to move out, we’ve both had heavy hearts. When she made him choose me over her, I think it all got lost. So, it’s been a while since we’ve laughed.

But today was different. I got it in my head to spend some time writing a lark. A silly little story that would remind me of home. A silly little story that would remind him who I was. I told him, Rahul, imagine Romeo was an Australian and Juliet was from South Africa. He looked at me expectantly, so I carried on. I said, imagine if they met at a rugby game and fell in love. He was confused, so I told him how the matches quickly descend into chaos. Because our accents are so similar. And we’re always comparing drafts. Nothing beats the castle, I heard quite often, around the side of the stadium that belonged to the bokke. He still didn’t quite understand. So I tried a little harder and told him it would go like the play. Two kids torn apart by some unintelligible rivalry. Because they’re kids. Not because it’s unimportant. He seemed to understand better then. We wrote some lines, a few funny things. And we read them to each other, oh we laughed and laughed.

It’s the longest time lately, that I’ve gone without thinking about Tom.
